Siena is the grand one — a Gothic city around the shell-shaped Piazza del Campo, with a stunning striped cathedral, usually given a guided walk plus free time. San Gimignano is the tiny, tower-studded jewel, explored at your own pace in a couple of hours. Between them runs Chianti, the classic vine-striped Tuscan countryside. A good tour balances all three.
Which tour to choose
Pick by the extras. Tours with a Chianti wine-estate lunch are the most rewarding if food and wine matter; ones that add Pisa or Monteriggioni pack in more sights for a longer day; small-group options trade a little cost for a gentler pace and fewer crowds. Check each listing for whether lunch is included and exactly which towns and stops you get.
Making the most of the day
These are long days with real coach time, so wear comfortable shoes for cobbles and slopes and pace yourself. Both towns get busy at midday — spring and autumn are lovelier and quieter than high summer. Know what you most want to see in the free-time stops, note the meeting times carefully, and leave a little room to just sit in a piazza with a coffee or a glass of Vernaccia.
